Mechanical seals assume sealing of rotating shafts against a wall, or housing. The main components are a spring-loaded seal ring and mating ring. One of the two rings, for example, is firmly seated in the housing, and the other is fixed on the shaft with pins. The sealing between the mechanical seal and the the shaft, or the housing, is usually made with secondary seals such as O-rings or cuffs. Therefore, the mechanical seal is generally made up of the slide-seal, the counter-ring, the spring system and a respective secondary seal. The selection of the respective materials plays a very large role here considering the application required.
